I think sometimes there is a rush to discard old school historiography but you make a good case for why the old masters like Oman and Napier are worth keeping. Which isn't to say that some of the new stuff isn't worthwhile - I'm reading Charles Esdaile's 2003 book on the Peninsular War and it's a must have in my humble opinion.
