2nd Battalion, 2nd Nassau Regiment

The completion of the 2nd battalion of the 2nd Nassau Regiment finishes another key component of the "German Division". For information on this famous regiment just follow the link in the order of battle below to the 1st battalion.

2nd [German] Infantry Division
GdD Jean-Francois, Baron Leval,

Brigade
OB Heinrich, Freiherr von Porbeck,
Baden Infantry Regiment Gross-Herzog Nr. 4: OB Heinrich, Freiherr von Porbeck, 2 battalions
Nassau Infantry Regiment Nr. 2: OB August von Kruse, 1st Battalion
Nassau Infantry Regiment Nr. 2: OB August von Kruse, 2nd Battalion
Baden Foot Battery: 2 – 7pdr howitzers, MAJ Franz-Friedrich-Christian von Steinmetz

Brigade

Composite Dutch Infantry Regiment: OB Baron de Grave, 2 battalions
Dutch Horse Artillery Battery Nr. 3: 6 guns, HPT Hendrik-Rudolph Trip

Confederation of the Rhine Battalion Nr. 3 (Frankfurt) OBL von Welsch,
Hessen-Darmstadt Foot Batterie: 4 – 6pdrs, LT Ludwig Venator

The second battalion as with the first is composed of figures primarily from "Warmodelling" although I have included the lovely looking AB officer in the bicorne at the front of the command group. The Colour is from Adolfo Ramos Flags

The answer to my "Can you spot the deliberate mistake?" question in my post about the 1st Battalion was that I had omitted the Voltigeur bases because I didn't have suitable figures. With the painting of the 2nd battalion I produced bases for both battalions

Next up, the third run through of the Oporto scenario and the Confederation of the Rhine Battalion No.3 Frankfurt.

The Nassau Regiment is the next unit to join my new German Division as part of plans to put together the units for Talavera. As I progress, I will provide links to the order of battle above to enable a review of the individual units completed.

On the 15th of October 1808 the 2nd Nassau Regiment, under the command of Oberst August von Kruse, crossed the Spanish border at Tolosa to begin its campaign in the Peninsular War. The 2nd Nassau regiment would take part in over forty engagements during the campaign. The battles would include Medellin, Talavera, Ocana and Vitoria.

On the 10th December 1813 Kruse, under secret orders from the Duke of Nassau, would lead his men to defect to the Allies and would go on to command his troops against the Emperor at Waterloo under the Duke of Wellington. It is reported the the Duke, familiar with the Nassau's in the Peninsula, spoke to General Kruse before Waterloo saying,

"I hope, General, that your actions today are as clever when you are fighting for me as they were in Spain when you were fighting against me."

My battalion is composed of figures from the "Warmodelling" range, and the Colour is from Adolfo Ramos Flags.

There are no prizes for spotting the deliberate mistake with this unit, but I thought it might be fun to see if regular, observant, readers of the blog can spot the omission. This should be remedied by the finish of the second battalion when I will reveal all.

Hesse-Darmstadt 2nd Battalion Gross-und- Erbprinz Regiment

With the completion of the Hesse-Darmstadt 2nd Battalion Gross-und- Erbprinz Regiment the first component of the German Division is done.

As with the 1st battalion, the unit is composed principally of Warmodelling figures with a lone AB officer in the front rank pointing his sword towards the enemy. The Colour is from Maverick Models.

If you would like to know more about the regiment and some of the sources I used in its construction then check out my previous post from last month on the 1st battalion.

Hesse-Darmstadt 1st Battalion Gross-und- Erbprinz Regiment

A few days ago I announced plans to commence work on the Talavera campaign and have started to build General Laval's "German Division".

2nd [German] Infantry Division GdD Jean-Francois, Baron Leval,

Brigade
OB Heinrich, Freiherr von Porbeck,
Baden Infantry Regiment Gross-Herzog Nr. 4: OB Heinrich, Freiherr von Porbeck,
 2 battalions
Nassau Infantry Regiment Nr. 2: OB August von Kruse,
2 battalions
Baden Foot Battery: 2 – 7pdr howitzers
MAJ Franz-Friedrich-Christian von Steinmetz

Brigade
GM David-Hendrik Chasse,
Composite Dutch Infantry Regiment: OB Baron de Grave,
2 battalions
Dutch Horse Artillery Battery Nr. 3: 6 guns
HPT Hendrik-Rudolph Trip

Brigade
GdB Balthazard
Grandjean,
Hessen-Darmstadt Infantry Regiment Gross- und Erbprinz Nr. 4: GM Georg-Johann Schaffer von Bernstein,
2 battalions
Confederation of the Rhine Battalion Nr. 3 (Frankfurt) OBL von Welsch,
Hessen-Darmstadt Foot Batterie: 4 – 6pdrs
LT Ludwig Venator

So the first unit completed is the 1st battalion Hessen-Darmstadt Infantry Regiment Gross- und Erbprinz Nr. Four originally commanded by General Major Georg-Johann Schaffer von Bernstein, but he later resigned the command to Oberst Freiherr von Ledebur.

The brigade of two battalions was formed in August 1808 and, during its time in Spain, was referred to as the Regiment de Hesse by the French.

Both battalions were reorganised along French lines with four fusilier companies, a voltigeur and grenadier company.

As well as being at Talavera in 1809, the regiment was also present at Medellin, Ocana and the defence of Badajoz in 1812.

My battalion is composed principally of figures from Warmodelling. I particularly like the neck cloths attached to the Shakos on these sculpts. They really capture the campaign look of these guys that you see in contemporary pictures of the troops in the Peninsula. The horse for the Colonel is a replacement AB mount, you can't beat an AB horse, and with a little bit of filing the Warmoddeling Colonel fitted perfectly. The Colour is from Maverick Models and thanks to Stuart for getting this one and others of the German Division off to me within a few days of ordering.

I hope the pictures do the battalion justice as my usual camera is in for repairs at the moment and my terrain is all set up for tomorrows Oporto game hence the unit is pictured on my table.

A particular reference I found useful was

In addition there are the Osprey titles,

Napoleon's German Division in Spain by Digby Smith is also a very informative source. A review of the book can be found here.

Next up the Second Battle of Oporto game two.

New Year Plans

At the moment I am working flat out in putting my Napoleonic collection together, or rather updating the collection I already had to the rule sets I intend to use.

I already had a collection of AB figures with about 20 battalions of French infantry, 4 Regts of Cavalry and a couple of batteries of artillery, with a similar number of Prussians for the 1813 to take them on. Theses were all based for "Grand Manner" so big battalions of 32 or 36 figures. I also have a similar number of Russians as yet unpainted, together with a second French army.

Grand Manner is a great set of rules but is showing its age, with no command and control as such and rather cumbersome mechanics compared with more modern systems. The system that often raises a few smiles is "routed ground". This was a mechanic to stop units moving across ground another unit had just routed through. You have to imagine the area covered in discarded muskets and shakos with the odd casualty lying around.

So after four years of rebuilding my WWII collection for a Normandy themed company level set up - see the picture of my Juno game in the previous post- I have returned to where it all began for me, the wars of Napoleon.

At first I thought I would pick up where I left off with an 1813 themed collection, but on reflection decided to build a Peninsular War theme as my mid war French were more suitable for that period and I had always intended at some stage to go in that direction.

So having decided on the theme, I needed to work with a set of rules in mind, as I have always been keen on the big battalion look for Napoleonics and the rules would have to cater for that. So after much consideration "General de Brigade", "Lasalle" and "Republic to Empire" I went for two sets, one paper based and one computerised, namely "Napoleon at War" (NAW) and "Carnage & Glory".

http://www.carnageandgloryii.com/

In addition to the rules I also decided to move to a more flexible terrain system as up to now I have relied on my own hex terrain and hex mat, but with the advent of I Aint been Shot Mum v2 and now NAW I have decided to use terrain mats with separate roads and rivers. So terrain purchases are also being factored in to the overall plan.

Having decided on the direction of travel I then decided to set myself some progress goals. So the project started in November 2010 and began with me re basing/repainting my French, so that by May of this year I have completed 12 x 24 battalions of Line, 6 x 24 Legere, 4 x 24 Combined Grenadiers, 1 x 24 Swiss Line, 3 x 12 Dragoon Regts, 2 x 12 Chass a Cheval, 2 x Foot batteries (each 4 guns plus limber team) 1 x Horse battery (3 guns plus limber team, plus 6 x Brigade Generals and 1 x Divisional General.

4th Swiss (AB figures)
In June I set about the British and too date now have done, 11 x 24 Line, 1 x 24 Highland, 2 x 24 Lights, 2 x 24 Guards, 2 x 24 Rifles (60th & 95th), 2 x 24 Cacadores, 1 x Foot battery (3 guns plus limber), 2 x 12 Light Dragoons, 6 x Brigade Generals and 1 x Divisional General.

Combined Grenadier battalion (Fantassin figures)
Those units completed to April this year were rolled out at our club meet that month and can be seen on the blog link.
http://devonwargames.blogspot.co.uk/2012_04_01_archive.html
In the game report I have also given our impression of the rules. As you will see we liked them.

The plan is to add further units through 2013, but with a view to producing a game as the units are completed. So I decided to start with Wellington's first major clash with the French at Vimiero, I will probably do Rolica as a warm up. I then plan to add units to do a time line sequence of games, Corunna followed by Opporto, Talavera etc. As I want to start playing as the collection permits I am looking to put together representative scenarios from these key battles, with the occasional BIG GRAND MANNER game in between, well that's the plan and I am using this blog to hold me accountable to it.

In time I intend to build some Spanish forces, as the early uniforms were great to contrast with the French in their Shakos, and the "anything goes" approach to uniform in the later period make the Spanish a great contrast to the Brits, Portuguese and French. I know the Spanish will be a challenge to field but that's all part of the fun, and with the intention to do Talavera and Albuera I can't leave them unpainted for too long.

So behind all my future adventures in 2013 that I will be recording here will be my underlying project, The Peninsular Collection, and I will update my progress as it goes.
