Was originally used on the USMC LVTP-6 howitzer support APC, and later (as noted above) on later program Mike (monitor) boats down in the delta. Pretty cool IMO that they have a survivor turret, as they are pretty rare other than in Singapore military.Darkest Star Gameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01751148876023202278noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2591229843590982581.post-7437984579968735782016-06-30T03:03:43.628-07:002016-06-30T03:03:43.628-07:00Yeah and the "Zippo" variant with 2 turr...Yeah and the "Zippo" variant with 2 turrets, each mounting a flamethrower and 7.62 looks pretty unpleasant too.

VinceVincehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03691369848035290908noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2591229843590982581.post-28344259908216196172016-06-29T14:58:42.264-07:002016-06-29T14:58:42.264-07:00Hey Vince, good stuff, great bit of detective work...Hey Vince, good stuff, great bit of detective work. That thing would force you to keep your head down when it started to blast away at a river bank. I see one turret had a shield mount with a couple of .50cal mounted for good measure! Nothing like a bit of overkill to make a point.carojonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11826580638291659193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2591229843590982581.post-50604081168683033092016-06-29T10:21:02.946-07:002016-06-29T10:21:02.946-07:00After much searching I can say it is a River Monit...After much searching I can say it is a River Monitor (Generation 2 Type - Howitzer) turret. They were heavily modified LCM 6's with different engines, guns and 10 tons of armour (heavy bar armour).

The monitors were part of River Assault Squadron 13 or 15 and many were transferred to South Vietnamese forces from 1970 on.

If you scroll down this link you can see a picture of the turret in situ:

http://www.warboats.org/stonerbwn/The%20Brown%20Water%20Navy%20in%20Vietnam_Part%203.htm

http://www.riverinesailor.com/July1969.htm

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_monitor

VinceVincehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03691369848035290908noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2591229843590982581.post-76104951489583490532016-06-28T15:46:17.983-07:002016-06-28T15:46:17.983-07:00Cheers Vince, yes that is a big gun especially for...Cheers Vince, yes that is a big gun especially for that turret. I hadn't thought of the Brown Water Navy. Most of the French stuff in Vietnam was US kit when they returned in 1945 so I reckon it is American but I don't know what and there wasn't any information at the museum.carojonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11826580638291659193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2591229843590982581.post-34624469828912076702016-06-28T14:08:48.347-07:002016-06-28T14:08:48.347-07:00Nice JJ.

Then I thought it might come from a "Brown Water" navy PBR or Patrol Ship, but I can't find one with a similar turret (most seem to have fast firing cannon or machine guns). It is a one man turret, so could be French, but French turrets of WW 2 tanks are pretty distinctive and more modern ones look nothing like it.

Tough one.

VinceVincehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03691369848035290908noreply@blogger.com
