Autumn in East Devon

With the Xmas season fast approaching, the autumn is giving way to colder night time temperatures and the logs are stacked ready for setting the open fire in the lounge. I am a confirmed cyclist, going out on the bike daily to get the health benefits that kind of routine has to offer, and in addition get to see and really appreciate the seasonal changes. Back in October I took the camera and thought you might like to see what I mean.

I love this time of year as the weather changes and the days grow shorter. A definite sign that autumn is here is when the deer start foraging in the fields.

The pictures below of the sunset were on a late bike ride and taken by Carolyn who had brought the camera hoping to see the deer. Sadly the field they like to graze in has now been ploughed and she has not seen them this year.

The sun in the picture above was just starting to go down and literally disappeared behind the horizon within about a minute and a half. I can't remember seeing the sun go down so quickly.

The colder often inclement weather is perfect for wargamers as our hobby comes into its own when forced to spend more time in doors; more reading, more painting, more playing and more planning of future projects and trips to make when the days grow longer and the weather improves.

  1. Always enjoy seeing your photos while cycling, Jonathan. With the weather in the Pacific Northwest USA, all of my cycling has been of the indoors variety now since early November. Still a daily training ride but indoors is not nearly as energizing as outdoors. Safer though...

    1. Thanks Jonathan, I know we are lucky here in the UK in usually not having the extremes in weather that are common in other parts of the globe, although my fellow countrymen in the Lake District who have had their homes flooded just before Xmas might have something to say about that.

The pleasure of cycling the same route daily throughout the year is that you get back in touch with the seasons that modern urban living seems to detach many of us from. It's fun to share it and great when others appreciate the experience.

You obviously have a similar routine and the health benefits are worth all the effort, in doors or out.

      - Well said! One my my great pleasures is to witness the changing of the seasons while cycling out on the Palouse.
