Carnage & Glory II - Battle of Quatre Bras at the Devon Wargames Group

A couple of weeks ago I met up with an old friend at the Devon Wargames Group and it was really great to relive old times.

That particular old friend was Carnage & Glory II (C&G II), Nigel Marsh's excellent set of Computer Moderated Rules, that I got to know intimately in a series of games played over several years as I worked to recreate the Battle of Talavera in glorious 18mm scale that culminated in several replays of the game and generated a collection of monies from all involved for the British & Commonwealth Veterans charity Combat Stress.

Since those heady days back in 2017, I've focussed on other periods and scales, but always look back at the games we played using C&G with great fondness and still regard the rules as perhaps the best simulation of horse & musket wargaming that simply cannot be achieved with a paper set of rules and dice and happily recommend them to anyone who has not sample the delights of this way of playing.

Fortunately I'm not the only one who thinks that way in the Devon Wargames Group and David, who took part in the Talavera project and became equally enthused with them offered to run a game of Quatre Bras at the club using the latest incarnation of C&G II.

I had a great time playing rather than directing and took the role of the Prince of Orange as the Dutch Belgians prepared to fend off the spearhead troops of Marshal Ney's corps advancing on the now very famous crossroads in Belgium.

If you would like to see how the game resolved and find out more about C&G II you can read all about it on the club blog in the link below.

  1. Hi JJ, I read the report on the Devon site. great stuff! I love Napoleonic scenarios where there are a lot of variables and surprises, and this one had that in spades. Nice to see your beautiful Napoleonic soldiers on display again as well.

    1. Hi Bill,
Thanks mate, it was a very interesting and fun game made all the more so with getting back to C&GII. Most of the figures were David's and he has developed a very nice style which only added to the game.

      Cheers
      JJ
